It is ironic that while each of us have been borne through some kind of sexual process (known as procreation), AND our free commercial world offers us a myriad of temptations centered around “pleasure.”
Sex and pleasure, while being associated, have been given negative associations . . . even in “Art.” Popular Art tends to be “pleasure” based. We “like” music, images, scenes and people based on our immediate, emotional, pleasure responses, while “High” Art, studies and analyzes the Art based on intellectually developed parameters. As the parameters of Popular Art become more refined, defined and sophisticated, they are accepted because there is a history and track record in which to analyze it.
As content creators, we try to use the intellectualized history to create stories that take Popular content (liked), and do it enough, that there IS a history, and a track record to accept or reject the content based on the same analysis as all “High” Art.
Does it make a segment (sometimes large), of the audience uncomfortable? Is the discomfort because they are not used to it, or because it is not beautiful or riveting or holding a fascination they are uncomfortable with? Is that discomfort because of their religion, the society that raised them, or something else?
Are WE uncomfortable with someone else’s pleasure, when we hunger for the explicit pleasure of success in sports, or accomplishment?
